Vanessa walked through the CrossFit 623 doors for the first time to join our third “Paleo Challenge” where we let non-623 athletes join in on the challenge. She, just like the rest of the group, looked nervous as this was her first time in a CrossFit box, but that was almost a year ago. Ten months later, Vanessa has been a familiar seven A.M.-er. A Message From Vanessa
I started CrossFit in February 2014. My friend Daniela invited me to come with her and do a “Paleo Challenge.” Afterwards we had talked about how I wanted to lose weight. I came in for my first WOD so nervous, just because I didn’t know what to expect, but after it was over and I had caught my breath I knew I had to come back. Not only was the workout great, but I also had people I didn’t even know cheering me on to finish the WOD.
After I had my first child, I was at the “globo gym” and would spend hours working out. Within a month, I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I then got married and quickly got into the habit of eating, just like my husband, which was a bad idea since he ate enough food for three of me. I then got pregnant with my second child. I had a hard pregnancy so being active wasn’t something I could really do. After my daughter was born, I simply stopped caring about myself. My husband, who is in the military, was always gone. I couldn’t do anything for myself because as mother of two it made me feel selfish if I would ever take time to myself. I had serious “mom guilt,” so I stopped caring and just let go.
One day, I stepped on the scale and found out that I was at my heaviest at 152 pounds and wore a size 12 pants. That is when I felt that something had to change. CrossFit changed my life. I kept coming to 623 and joined my second Paleo Challenge. Within six months I was wearing a size six pants and they’re getting loose! As far as my weight, I’ve only lost 12 pounds, but that’s when I realized it doesn’t matter what the scale says. If all my old clothes fit, I must be doing something right.
What kept me coming back were the amazing people at Crossfit 623. Everyone is so supportive of each other. If you think you can’t lift the weight on the bar in front of you, the person next to you does. Hitting a PR is my second reason to coming back; it’s the best feeling. When you hit a PR it’s like being able to accomplish something you didn’t know your body could do. Seeing how fast my body changed isn’t too shabby either.
The thing I love most about Crossfit623 is definitely the people. Everyone is friendly and supportive. It’s hard to find people like that, but you can find a whole bunch at this box. All the coaches here are great, every one of them care about making sure you’re doing the movements right and seeing you improve.
When I see old pictures of myself I get sad, mostly because that’s not me at all. I’m just glad I found myself again and I’m so proud of all the things I’ve accomplished at the box and hopefully I can keep progressing here.
